Socrative

So many apps! How to pick which ones will work best in the classroom!  There are so many good ones!  Including Socrative.  Socrative is a quick response app with a lot of cool features teachers can use for a formative assessment.  It works on both Apple and Android devices so no matter what type of device a student has they can download the app.
The process starts by the teacher creating an account.  A class name is given to the teacher that in turn is given to the students for login purposes.  The teacher can create quizzes, exit slips and review games.  Students respond to questions projected on the screen by marking their choice on their device.  Questions can be multiple choice, true/false, or short answer.  Responses can be seen immediately on teachers app by student and by whole group.  The quizzes can also be converted to a "space race" where students are teamed up and as they answer questions correctly the team's rocket moves.  The first rocket to finish wins and therefore the team wins.  This would lead students to be competitive and work hard to answer correctly.  Below is a video from YouTube showing how cool Socrative is!

This is a very cool tool in my opinion.  I would use this app for an assessment of an individual lesson.  The simplicity of use for students would help this to be a very useful tool.  Just two or three questions could help assess whether students understood a particular lesson.  I would also use the space race as a review tool before a test.  The fun, competitive nature of the game is very entertaining and it would also assess whether students are ready for the test or not.
